AI & The Anti-algorithm Home:
Why 2026 Interiors will Embrace the Past

The perception of artificial intelligence is divided, with AI experts viewing it as a positive addition to society, and the majority of U.S. adults remaining cynical towards it.
While some may embrace it and others may shy away, there has been an underlying culture-wide shift due to the emergence of AI. The publicโs verbal concerns have manifested themselves in more subtle but equally telling ways. Instead of hearing these worries, we can now see them. Trading dainty jewelry for chunky necklaces, leggings for thrifted jeans, streaming services for vinyls, digital watches for classic analog watches, and clean typography for bold, colorful fonts. The priority isn’t being clean or convenient anymore. It centers on mindfulness and the human touch: feeling and embracing life as it is, messiness and all. So it’s no surprise to see people pivoting to the times that felt undeniably human: the past. Here are six ways people are rejecting the “Smart Home.”

Music in your ears and in your hands.
For a decade now, music streaming services have dominated. With vast selections and reach, these services are undeniably convenient for both the artist and the listener. While you don’t have to ditch your music streaming apps, collecting and displaying physical music has been a hobby growing in popularity. In 2023, vinyl sales were the largest since the 1980s, and it wouldn’t be illogical to assume vinyl sales could increase again in 2026. In a world tainted by technology,ย people are craving nostalgia more than ever. Whether it’s vinyls from the 50s, cassette tapes from the 70s, or CDs from the 90s, collecting and displaying these items curates a highly nostalgic personal space. The music itself doesn’t have to be accurate to its time, today, they still make vinyl record pressings of modern music.
Books belonging on the shelf.ย
In 2007 the Kindle launched, forever altering the way people consume literature. With many U.S. families owning multiple TVs, smartphones, and other screens in their home, it may be time to ditch the e-books. Physical books are a simple way to resupply charisma and character into your space. Fill your empty bookcases with real books. Give your eyes a break from the screen. Not a reader? Coffee table books on topics or hobbies that interest you work just as effectively. Your bookshelves should be a window into who you are as a person.
Highlighting the Homemade.ย
Chances are your home is suffocating with screens. In opposition to this, there will be a resurgence of organic styles. 2026 will highlight the handmade. This means handwritten letters and recipes. Hand-painted and hand-drawn art. Hand-sewn and hand-embroidered fabrics.
All of which make for ideal wall art. Framing any handmade works instantly revives your wearisome walls.
Knick-knacks are back.ย
Not long ago, your knick-knacks were clutter. You were to tuck them away in drawers, cabinets, or throw them away altogether. Trinkets were too untidy for otherwise sleek, modern interiors. Now we are seeing knick-knacks for what they really are, souvenirs, talking pieces, hand-me-downs from your great-grandmother. They are not an essential part, but a valuable part of individuality. Weย areย seeing the return of knick-knacks in fashion with the revival of keychains on purses and brooches on jackets. So arrange your trinkets on shelves, layer them on trays, or set them up on your nightstand. In a world fixated on functionality, possessing something with no obvious purpose is a rebellion.

Leaving Artificial Plants in the Past. ย
It seems we are heading towards a future lacking life. What better way to correct than by integrating more life into your home? While everything else is turning artificial, your plants don’t have to be. Trade your fake plants for real plants. The cure for feeling detached is becoming deliberate. Reconnect with nature in your own home.

Hiring (REAL)ย interior designers.ย
If you want your home to feel human then hire an actual human! While AI taking jobs is a growing concern, creative work isnโt as easily replaced as many think. While images may be generated now they are far from being art. Art is intrinsically human, which means it requires a human to create it. The same applies to design.
According to The Guardian, AI chatbots “often affirm what you say, appearing agreeable and validating because they’re designed for engagement, creating a satisfying user experience.” Additionally, Psychology Today says “a primary goal for AI is to keep you interacting, and agreeable responses feel better and encourage more use.” AI does not deliver you truths, and sometimes it won’t even offer accurate information. Affirmation is AI’s goal. Human interaction is the real foundation of great design. Real designers and contractors, such as those on Center of Design’s team, bring expertise, insight, and resources that AI cannot.

Conclusion
If the 2010s were defined by impassive interiors, then 2026 must be dedicated to dedication. Committing completely to whatever style you feel called to. 2026 is a contradiction. It is about returning to awareness and intention while being surrounded by automatism and detachment. Whether intended or subconscious, people are fighting algorithms, artificial applications, and technological developments with a punch of personality and you can too! Try ditching home assistants, Kindles, and minimizing excess screens. Integrating physical media, handmade pieces, personal trinkets, real plants, and hiring interior design professionals are all effective easy ways to create an anti-algorithm home.
