Forest Elements

Thermally modified wood made through a custom, in-house kiln by Forest Elements.

/kiln/: thermally insulated chamber, a type of oven, that produces temperatures sufficient to complete some process, such as hardening, drying, or chemical changes. Kilns have been used for millennia to turn objects made from clay into pottery, tiles and bricks.
This means the wood is treated with controlled pyrolysis for 2-3 days and the actually the chemical structure (cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose) of the wood is actually changed by removing the organic compounds and most of the water.  This makes the thermally modified wood more durable and able to withstand seasonal changes, without having to use chemicals to get the desired result.

The wood emerges from the kiln:

  • Much more durable (with a durability class 1-3 EN 350-2)

  • Increased biological resistance to micro-organisms and insects

  • Reduction of the shrinking and swelling of wood caused by seasonal humidity from 50-90%

  • Environmentally friendly naturally darkened color without requiring any chemicals

On top of all of this, it is STUNNING and 100% of the wood is manufactured from timber companies in the United States and Canada.
